CFUV-FM: The Martlet Pod - Laura Smith

The Martlet Pod is a biweekly podcast that dives deep into stories. Produced by Laura Smith, this collaboration features reporters from Uvic’s campus newspaper - the Martlet - digging deeper into the stories they cover. In this submission, Laura explores the SECWEMPEC land defenders fight against the Trans-Mountain Pipeline extension and how it reveals BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act as a hollow statement. Also in this submission, clips from the Martlet Pod’s consistent coverage of housing inaccessibility in Victoria; from the scarcity of affordable housing, to the rigid enforcement of bylaws at the expense of the homeless population in Beacon Hill Park and finally with the release of the Vital Signs Report which revealed the extent to which the pandemic has exacerbated issues around inequality, affordable housing, and financial instability.
