CICK - I Digress with Pammer (Pamela Haasen)
We are proud to submit I Digress with Pammer for Music Variety Program.
Her show is a melange of new, Canadian music (French and English) dappled with “classic songs you should have heard by now”. Just in 2023 alone, Pamela (or ‘Pammer’ as she’s known on air), has featured interviews with contemporary artists such as Yess Woah, Riun Garner, Chance Hutchison (Priors), Sarah Northcott, Nickybaby, L Con and more! Her shows exceed the minimum Canadian and New content weekly, and her dedicated base of listeners are in contact with her in real time (even her Ontario listeners) to which she pivots and involves them in her “digressions”.
In 2023, Pammer produced over 20 original interludes, clips, beds, intros, parodies, and skits. These interludes appear between songs without warning to keep the listener on their toes. This year, her Hallowe’en show (which is typically off the rails) featured 9 user-submitted stories recorded, edited, SFX’d and produced by Pammer. She uses the medium of radio to expose listeners to exciting, genre-bending music dappled with moments of nonsense, fear, connection, humour, and love. She features live and recorded interviews and has even hosted a show from the CICK drum kit as her band helped raise hundreds of dollars for CICK’s funding drive.
The attached audio features the following clips:
- 2023 funding drive live from the drum kit
- Interview with Chance Hutchison (Priors, Montreal)
- Can-Con Music jingle
- 2023 Halloween Spooktacular: Dig Yourself Out Intro
- 2023 Halloween Spooktacular: Yvonne’s Dream (user submitted) *featuring original music by local ambient group 1000cuts
- Co-hosting with Isla (niece) on her birthday
- Gone Girl parody intro Song Girl

Revolution Rock has special focus programming every February when they have theme month based programming and will also have special focus shows and/or interviews. TRENT RADIO - 50s60s REUNION ( John MacRae)
My show is called the 50s60s REUNION and is heard weekly on Trent Radio CFFF FM. My hour of music focuses on songs from the 1950s and 1960s both popular and many that didn't necessarily hit the top of the music charts. I like to keep the hour upbeat by concentrating on production values, timing and clean transitions and by punctuating the show with station ID's, that I produce, that I feel are reflective of the experience of AM radio in the 50s and 60s. I use everything at my disposal including LPs, 45s, CDs and MP3s. I also focus on keeping talk segments short and to the point. As well I like to have an interesting opening to grab the listeners attention and an informative theme for a good portion of the hour, anywhere from 15 to 35 minutes. In the case of this submission the theme for the week was the British Invasion of the 1960s.

Kootenay Co-op Radio - Bach and Beyond Music to Die For! (Doug Jamieson)
I am a composer in Nelson BC. Each Tuesday morning I host Bach and Beyond, a show of mostly classical music. The 'Beyond' part of the title allows excursions into different genres.
A few years ago, I had the idea to ask musical friends "What music would you like to hear when you shed this mortal coil?" The response was enthusiastic and the selections interesting. I recorded 4 shows on this theme and this submission is from my 2023 show.

CJSR - Calling All Blues (Graham Guest and Grant Stovel)
CJSR's flagship blues program is a weekly hangout with BBFFs (blues best friends forever) Grant Stovel & Graham Guest. Every week G&G play a selection of new and vintage blues, along with plenty of live blues, the Blues News, and the weekly 8 o'clock Giveaway. Their banter is warm and welcoming, which speaks to their friendship, and invites listeners in. Since the pandemic, the blues boys have had to record the show remotely, but the banter still feels very present.
This episode is a feature on the artist playing the Calgary Blues Fest.

CJSW - The Hydian Way (Michael Potemkin)
The program has been an integral part of the Wednesday night programming lineup since finding its permanent home on Wednesdays 9-10PM MST in April 2021. The Hydian Way initially began as a program that took listeners on a journey through Drum and Bass, Bassline, Riddim and everything in between. As Michael has developed as a programmer and DJ, so too have his tastes changed. Over the last year, Michael has slowly transitioned into playing Hard Techno and Schramz, quickly cultivating a reputation as an important community member in Calgary’s thriving hard techno scene.
With the intention of bringing the hard techno sound to Calgary, he continually demonstrates a commitment to showcasing both local and international techno acts. In 2023 alone, he invited many guests including DJ Penelope (Frankfurt-based Hard Techno DJ at Feud Club) and DJs Pattern & David Kel (Calgary-based Peak-time Techno DJs who started “Leben Collective”).
When he’s not joined by guests or busy promoting local events, Michael takes an informal educational approach to his show–– sharing technical advice regarding live mixing, using CDJs and more. Michael is not shy to admit that he’s new to the hard techno scene and asks questions not only for the listener’s sake, but to also further his own understanding of the genre and community. It’s this very facet of his program that I believe sets itself apart from others. In this sense, each episode may be treated as an informal lesson as the listener is invited to learn alongside Michael as he too develops his skills and interests in techno. I feel this lends his program a degree of authenticity that is unparalleled by other programs that may assume a basic level of understanding of the genre on behalf of listeners.
Michael’s dedication to hard techno and the local music community make his program a great entry point for not only those brand new to the genre but also techno aficionados looking to expand their understanding too, and has solidified its reputation as a space where DJs and collectives can cut their teeth.

CJSW - Tombstone After Dark (Keri Rak, Daren Powell)
or every week in 2023, Tombstone After Dark celebrated 25 years of being on-air by doing a retrospective on Daren and Keri’s favorite musical moments from the past quarter century. They coupled these glances into the past by also featuring some of the best up-and-coming country artists from Canada and around the world. In addition to their retrospective look back into the annals of Tombstone After Dark, Daren and Keri often do one-off programming specials such as a Calgary Stampede-themed music show, holiday specials and their annual Funding Drive program where they create a “campfire” feel to their program by using audio production and a bevy of guest voices to build an exotic, but relatable world that listeners look forward to every year.
Daren and Keri’s weekly efforts with Tombstone After Dark has not only been one of our most popular specialty programs with listeners, but their unique touch has inspired newer CJSW programmers to discover what country music has to offer

CJSW - Poser Radio (Sheroog Kubur)
Sheroog Kubur has been hosting Poser Radio on CJSW airwaves since 2022, having showcased a variety of Artists in sub-loud genres such as Musilm and Indigenous Punk, Industrial, and local Indie Rock as notable mentions. Poser Radio is a show that is not afraid to admit that it doesn't know what it's doing. Born out of the idea that sometimes alternative music can feel gatekept, Sheroog Kubur uses their show and CJSW airwaves to represent those who would not have a voice otherwise.
A deserving themed past show that should be highlighted is from June 2023, in which Poser Radio fell on the celebration of Eid al-Adha. Sheroog Kubur invited listeners to learn about the lesser known Loud sub-genre Taqwacore (Islamic Punk) as a theme for the show. This not only provided a platform for under-represented artists, but also allowed for education on a topic that may not be widely recognized. In addition, Sheroog Kubur brought attention to the resistance happening in Sudan through the music featured on the show. Poser Radio validates that nothing is more punk than fighting for the world you want to see, and the combination of music and informative discussion made this particular show a standout and deserving of recognition.

CJSW - Post A-Punk-Alyptic (Atiyyah Ladipo)
Punk is rough around the edges, it’s dirty, it pushes the limits and it transforms. Sometimes the reach, importance and transformation of the genre can get overlooked because of its apprehensive outward appearance. Post A-Punk-Alyptic changes that weekly. Anyone who tunes to CJSW Friday mornings gets the privilege of joining Atiyyah as she takes the listeners straight into the underground world of post-Punk music. Highlighting new artists every week Atiyyah takes us to school, loading us up with all the fun and informative ‘nitty gritty facts’ about our favourite artists. It’s more than facts. It’s an entire rundown of the history of the chosen artist of the week. You learn about their history, their process, individual members, what was going through their minds at pivotal moments and really anything worth knowing.
Listening back across the past year I was reminded just how many bands and albums Post A-Punk-Alyptic has introduced me to. I’ve always taken pride on my knowledge of Punk but Atiyyah puts me to shame, and it doesn’t look like she’s even trying. Despite that, the hard work and sheer amount of effort are clearly present. Some of my favourite episodes this year (which I selected audio from) exemplify this perfectly. These episodes introduced me to bands like The Virgin Prunes, Fad Gadget or Josef K who I had never gotten to experience. Atiyyah provides Punk the attention it deserves Friday mornings here on CJSW. Whether you need new Punk info, a killer Punk playlist, or just a host who exemplifies every aspect of Punk. Post A-Punk-Alyptic is what you NEED to listen to to hang out with the cool kids.

CFRC - Yellow Brit Road: An Alternative Journey Behind The Curtains of Music (Rue Mathur)
Yellow Brit Road is a journey into the world of British and Irish music, and it comes with its own crossroads, stop signs, left turns and scenic drives along the way! I am Aarushi (Rue) Mathur, an undergraduate student at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Each week, I guide listeners on exciting aural trips through the best new music on the British and Irish alternative music scenes, whether they be in the form of indie rock bands from the Isle of Wight, post punk poets from Dublin, kora players and saxophonists in London’s unique neo-jazz scene, the Welsh-language independent music scene, futuristic Cornish language synth pop based on dystopian sci-fi novels, feminist punk from Glasgow, or Irish language rap from Belfast!
In this montage of shows from across 2023, you will hear a clip from our New Year’s Day themed show where listeners shared music that signified new beginnings to them and why, and our coverage of the state of modern hip hop scenes across the UK and Ireland, to mark hip hop’s 50th anniversary. You’ll also hear interview clips from Belfast post punk band Enola Gay on making music in Northern Ireland, Brighid Fry from Toronto indie band Housewife, talking about gender inequality in heavy music, feminism and the climate organisation Music Declares Emergency Canada. We also have an interview with Conner Molander from Montreal folk-indie rock band Half Moon Run, who was so impressed with our interview that he gave me and our station a shout-out on stage, saying that I have a bright future in music, during a sold-out show at the 800-seater Kingston Grand Theatre— a career highlight for me!
