CiTR 101.9 - Marco Polo Goes Missing (Deon Feng)

Combining personal essay with found audio, ambience, music, and editing interventions, Marco Polo Goes Missing is a work of experimental autofiction in the medium of sound. The project abandons linear storytelling and constructs an alternative radio narrative through fragmentation. Though not prompted by a specific theme, Marco Polo Goes Missing is largely informed by two years Deon spent living abroad in France, as well as the earth-and-episteme-shattering changes that followed. Monologues, voice memos, compositions, squeaky doors, sounds of different rains, and various nostalgic echoes come together to collage an experience of disenchantment and delight, the sweet dialectic of life. As Marco Polo (the alleged noodle-bringer himself) most likely did not say, “It is not the voice that commands the story: it is the ear.ˮ 

冯棣盎 Deon Feng is an artist and writer triangulated by Northern China, Metro

Vancouver suburbia, and most recently, the French imaginary. They are institutionally accredited with a BA in Political Humanities from the Paris Institute for Political Studies (Sciences Po) and a BA in Visual Arts from UBC. Feng's writing has appeared in The Fiddlehead, Cloud Lake Literary, and on CiTR 101.9FM, where they occasionally make playlists and sound experiments.
