Dave Del Rizzo - CFUZ
NOMINATION for Volunteer of Year Award – DAVE DEL RIZZO
CFUZ Peach City Radio lit up the airwaves in Penticton on February 1, 2019. This took place about 9 years after the first call for interest in a community radio station in Penticton. Our hardest working volunteer Dave Del Rizzo has been in the room for every significant step taken to get to where we are today. Dave is still in the room and is one of the key reasons Peach City Radio has reached this exciting FM milestone. Please consider Dave as the NCRA Volunteer of the Year - not only because he gives so much to this project, but because it is rare to find a community radio volunteer these days who has built the station itself, not just contributes to it.
The list of Dave’s accomplishments as a volunteer and as a leader of volunteers is long. Too long. Here is a summary of why he is our Volunteer of THIS PARTICULAR PAST YEAR:
Dave is a member of the Peach City Community Radio Society Board of Directors
Dave is the Program Director
Dave is the Past Technical Director and a key part of the Technical Committee
Dave arranged for and chaired the first CFUZ Station Management meetings in 2018
Dave is the webmaster and has developed our custom webpage which hosts our membership database, society documents, news archive and other resources
Dave is the guy who gives volunteers their door code and access to online tools
Dave manages the Airtime database and schedules volunteers to fill the blocks
Dave chairs the All Programmer’s meetings and provides all program related training
Dave will take your urgent phone call from the sound booth at 7am on a Sunday and 11 pm on a Tuesday
Dave dealt with the City of Penticton, NavCanada, ISED and the engineering firms with regards to tower specifications
Dave wrote our public consultation document and shared it with all neighbours in our radius prior to turning on the signal
Dave set up the tower and antenna on the roof
Dave installed the transmitter
Dave maintains the programmer log system and is developing custom logging software for CFUZ
Dave sets up all off-site sound systems and live on-location broadcasts such as election forums and Vinyl Fest
Dave researches, orders, purchases and writes up procedures for all new equipment
Dave co-hosts a weekly 1-hour radio show with friend and fellow board member Ian Mackinder called Left Off the Dial which is also syndicated and currently playing in Smithers, Lethbridge and Saint John.
Dave hosts a weekly 2-hour radio show called My Morning Racket
Dave is one of the rotating hosts for On Board which is a 30-minute weekly show that highlights everything the board is working on for the society.
Dave trains volunteers on studio use and CRTC compliance
Dave mentors new programmers, and is often on-site while new shows broadcast live for the first time.
Dave meets one on one with potential programmers.
Dave is working with a member of the Penticton Indian Band who is looking for guidance in setting up an Indigenous Language radio station in the area
Dave volunteers at all events related to Peach City Radio
Dave is a key member of the Okanagan Vinyl Festival committee and manages the live stream and stage
Dave spent the day with ISED for the broadcast testing, he set up and populated the test broadcast programming and test messaging, and monitored responses over a 3 week period
Also (in early 2019) Dave set up a countdown to the launch of our FM broadcast that lasted from midnight to 6am on February 1 and then anchored a 4 hour launch episode of My Morning Racket for CFUZ
Dave commits between 30 and 40 hours per week to Peach City Radio. Unpaid. On top of a full time job at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory.
Dave led our team to successfully launch 92.9 FM
CFUZ has no paid staff. While many other volunteers go to work and then put in valuable hours of time towards this project, Dave finds the time, energy and drive to do the most and has done so for 9 years.
Most people would acknowledge that volunteering to help set up a community radio station requires considerable time commitment and responsibility, but Dave’s level of dedication far surpasses those of a typical volunteer. Peach City Radio wholeheartedly submits Dave Del Rizzo to the NCRA/ANREC Community Radio Awards Program - as Volunteer of the Year. There is no question - CFUZ Peach City Radio would not be the successful station that it is without his passion and leadership.
Sincerely,
Jackie Del Rizzo – President
Claire Thompson - Vice President
Karla Ziegler - Treasurer
Ian Mackinder - Secretary
Suzanne Mackiner - Communications Director
Craig Henderson - Director at Large
Pierre Davidson - Programming Committee
Nils Finsson - Technical Director
