CJSW - 2023 Funding Drive

To the members of the NCRA Awards Committee,

I am writing to nominate CJSW’s Funding Drive Audio Content for the Creative Production Award at the NCRC42 CRABOs.

With planning beginning in earnest in February each year, CJSW’s annual Funding Drive is the organization’s largest fundraising endeavor annually, and a time for staff and volunteers to come together and collaborate on creative projects that push the boundaries of what is possible through radio. Last year’s theme One Radio, Endless Adventure–– taking inspiration from the popular tabletop dice role playing game Dungeons n’ Dragons–– embodied this idea of unexplored creative potential and the magic of community that CJSW strives toward through its commitment to dynamic programming and community engagement 24/7 365 days a year.

Deviating from previous years where milestone audio was crafted as stand-alone production elements, this year’s milestone audio could be heard as one long continuous radio play when heard together. Spearheaded by our Production Coordinator Cam, this year’s Funding Drive milestone audio told the story of four adventurers as they embarked on a quest for the crystal beacon to restore order and obtain radio glory after an evil fairy took hold of the beacon, broadcasting its foul programming. This was complemented by supplementary CRTC stamps, stingers, and ads that were creatively focused around the ‘One Radio, Endless Adventure theme’. Altogether, these production elements mirrored the real-life ups and downs faced by the station over the last few years in light of challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing economic strife that have threatened our means of support.

To execute these production elements, we leveraged the support of our dedicated volunteer base. Of particular note, the four adventurers were voiced by three current UCalgary undergraduate students and a former station manager. Their contributions were essential to the success of the drive and lent our elements an original and inventive tone.

For these reasons, please consider CJSW’s 2023 Funding Drive Audio for the Creative Production Award at the 2024 CRABOs.
