Julian Taylor's Jukebox - Episode #134 “Celebrating Juneteenth and National Indigenous Peoples Day”

Julian Taylor, a staple in the Canadian music scene, has a career spanning 30 years. Owing to Julian's Mohawk and Afro-Caribbean heritage, the mission of Julian Taylor’s Jukebox is to feature black, indigenous, and artists of colour, with a focus on independent artists like himself.

The concept for Julian Taylor’s Jukebox comes from the Rowe AMI vintage jukebox in Julian’s home, inviting listeners to hear what Julian would play them if they we hanging out with him in his living room. Approximately 70% of the music Julian plays every week is from BIPOC artists. There is also a minimum of 30% of music from indigenous artists, and a minimum of 35% from Canadian artists.

Episode 134, titled “Celebrating Juneteenth and National Indigenous Peoples Day”, was conceived when we realized that these two special days happened to fall on the same week in 2024, the 19th and 21st of June. The first hour features music exclusively from black artists, the second from all Indigenous artists, and the third hour is a mix of the two, sprinkled with many listener favourites. We had fun and dug deep to create an episode with songs from different decades, genres, and countries, knitting together the triumphs and struggles of these communities through music and talent.
