On this January 5th, 2025 episode of Labelicious Radio on CJSR 88.5FM, Nathaniel Sutton sat down with Craig Martell, the former owner of Edmonton’s beloved live music venue, Wunderbar. During the conversation, Nathaniel explored Craig’s journey from running one of the city’s most cherished venues to launching Double Lunch Records, which later expanded to Double Lunch Productions.

The interview focuses on the evolution of Craig’s work, the vision behind Double Lunch, and what it means to continue fostering Edmonton’s music community in new and creative ways.

I'm Michael Roudbari, creator and host of On The Roster, Toronto's pop-entertainment show spotlighting rising Canadian talent with live performances, real stories, and that intimate behind-the-scenes vibe fans crave.

This submission captures one of the most exciting moments yet: me going LIVE from Vancouver, British Columbia, covering the 2025 Juno Awards! Right from the heart of Rogers Arena and Juno Week (March 26–30), I was on the ground soaking up the energy of Canada's biggest night in music—hosted by Michael Bublé, with massive wins for artists like Tate McRae (who swept four awards including Album and Single of the Year), and unforgettable performances and moments across the weekend.

Being there in person to interview, capture red carpet buzz, and bring the Juno magic back to our audience was electric. It highlighted how On The Roster connects with the bigger scene—giving emerging artists the same platform to share their journeys while celebrating the stars who've made it. CKHA - Backbeat Radio (Lorne VanSinclair)

Backbeat has been on the air at CanoeFM since 2019 and is now syndicated across Canada through !Earshot Distro and all over the world through Radio4all. While it is not advertised as a blues show, the blues is at the core of all the music I play.

Backbeat explores the history of American popular music and how it is reflected in modern music. The unstated theme of the show is that it's the mixture of cultures that makes this music strong. It's unstated because I believe that a message is stronger if listeners figure it out on their own.

I play all genres; country (which has included blues influences since day one), gospel (a mixture of blues and spiritual), rhythm and blues (self explanatory) and Latin (another aspect of the blues) as well as vintage recordings from Africa, the Caribbean and Hawaii, all of which have influenced, or have been influenced by, the blues.

I proudly include music by current, working musicians who keep that tradition alive. I've been a long-time supporter of Blue Moon Marquee, who combine their indigenous culture with blues greats like Lonnie Johnson, Memphis Minnie and Howlin' Wolf. I regularly include music by David Vest, Brandon Isaak, Harry Manx, Diana Braithwaite and many other Canadian musicians, mixing their music with the classics because it stands up with the best.

Since 2020, Signal.bin has been the main outlet for host, Sean Warkentine, to present new music, deep cuts, showcase alternative fusion from around the world, and highlight artists who are doing things a little differently. While being an eclectic mix of all genres, its focus rests firmly on music possessing an experimental spirit.

The episode being submitted was a DJ mix created by DJ Laura Palmer for Busy Signal, a Met Radio program spotlighting local and volunteer DJ mixes. The mix was aired on both Busy Signal and Signal.bin. The Busy Signal.bin mix blends together beats from around the world that challenge more conventional dance beats.

Sean is the Program Director of Met Radio 1280 AM, having worked in the sector since 2013.

I am writing to nominate Sonic Cycle, hosted by Kaamil Kareemi for the Best Rap or Similar
award through the 2025 CRABOS. Each week, Kaamil puts noticeable time, care and attention into the
planning of his Friday morning program.
Through Sonic Cycle, Kaamil introduces listeners to new hip-hop and R&B releases, with a focus
on showcasing local and Canadian artists. He ties current music to music of the past in some of his more
focused shows, and provides his audience with engaging content they may not have otherwise been
exposed to. Kaamil often has guests on his show, who he invites to select the music and promote their
projects live on air. This always makes for engaging dialogue and a well-rounded show, with Kaamil
having a fluid on-air presence and a knack for conducting interesting conversations.

Fervor Coulee's Rootsicana & Bluegrass (FCRB) is your weekly stop for two hours of the best of roots music—classic country, folk, blues, roots rock, Americana, Canadiana, ‘grassicana, old-time, jam band, modern country that doesn’t bite, folk rock, county rock, Indigenous music, country soul & R&B, rockabilly, western, and—of course—bluegrass with an emphasis on music originating in Alberta and Canada. Good music for good people! The second hour of each episode is dedicated entirely to bluegrass.

This episode presents a good sample of what to expect every week on FCRB, with a selection of new songs and deep dives, including features on Ryan Wayne, & Hazel Dickens (born one hundred years ago this month), and some live John Stewart while also playing several bluegrass and old-time murder ballads.

Host Donald Teplyske has been writing about "rootsicana" and the like on his Fervor Coulee blog since 2008. His passion and deep knowledge for music comes through every episode with his thoughtfully selected playlists. Donald also serves as a member of the Polaris Prize jury, and was most recently a grand jury member for the 2025 prize year.

Milan hosts a program that is a total variety pack. Motte and Bailey is a program which sprawls
across the totally wild, and under-recognized genres. The program itself is broken into two worlds.
First there is the Motte, which focuses on electronic and experimental influenced music. This half
will feature things like break-core, glitch-hop, and harsh noise. Second, the Bailey, which takes a
dive into everything heavy and intense. This is where you will find genres like black metal,
grindcore, sludge, digital hardcore and more. Milan brings a plethora of styles, highlighting
“forgotten visionaries,” and “modern trailblazers.” That mix has flavors coming from everywhere,
however it absolutely represents and highlights everything “Loud.”

Alex knows his punk. Getting into a genre like punk it is easy to get wrapped in a
subgenera or particular style. It’s easy to get elitist about what is and isn’t punk. Alex
steps above all of this. He recognizes the vast width of what punk can be. He bridges the
gap on all things punk offering the total package. You can listen to an episode of The
Punk Trunk and hear songs ranging from melodic pop punk, the crustiest hardcore,
fastest hardest skate and street, the most head bobbing ska, and everything in between.
Alex blends this multifaceted mix masterfully. He keeps the show flowing naturally and
keeps you hooked to hear what he will play next. Alex has fun with his program. He
clearly loves the genre and he embodies that in thoughtful insight on songs and the
artists that make them, themed episodes, and the variety of what he programs.

The Caribbean Connexion has been rocking the CJSR airwaves steady since 2007! DJ Iceman (The Nice Man! He's cool as ice, but twice as nice!) brings 2 hours of the latest reggae and soca, as well as a Caribbean news segment by Win Callender all the way from Barbados.

My Name is Daniel Briand and I am the Lead Journalist, Public Relations Coordinator and Emergency Technical Advisor at the Community Radio Station 105.9 Seaside FM. In the past October I was asked to start a show on Tuesdays which I called “The Cape Breton Songbook” the show is about all things Cape Breton!

In this show I make it feel like a “good ole fashion kitchen party”, which means that I not only play songs by cape bretoners but also songs that you would hear at a kitchen party. I also tell stories and do deep dives into the greats of cape breton music like Rita Mcneil, John Allan Cameron, ect. But not just musicians. I also do stories on athletes and historical figures of the island like Giant Maskil.

In my short time doing this show I have really enjoyed learning and showcasing legendary and up and coming cape breton artists in my show. I have gotten very positive feedback and stories from listeners that show the history and culture of Cape Breton.

The Submission I chose to submit is a weekly segment I do called “The Islander Highlight” where I do a quick deep dive into the stories of legendary Cape Breton artists and play some of their biggest hits so the listeners can learn something new about some of their favorite Cape Breton Artists. Because I do this segment weekly I submitted a few different ones from different shows so I picked a date close to when my show started.

A little more about me is that I grew up in a very small village (less than 80 people) in Cape Breton named Smelt Brook. Because of this close knit community there were always Kitchen Party's where people brought their own guitar and told their own stories. I think because of that it gave me the knowledge to launch this weekly show and make it one of the most well received on the station.
