CJSR - Accessing Home (Meagan Miller)

Accessing Home is a podcast series exploring the accessibility of community housing in Edmonton, Alberta. In Canada, the term “community housing” refers to all forms of non-market social and affordable housing. Across five episodes, the series delves into the multifaceted and relational meanings of access, examining how community housing can better meet the needs of disabled people, who are disproportionately represented in this sector.

The series is hosted by Meagan Miller and Zachary Weeks. Meagan is a non-disabled, graduate student at the University of Alberta with a background in community radio. This podcast is part of her MA thesis, and was produced under the guidance of an accessibility advisory committee. Zachary is one of her three accessibility advisors with lived experience of disability. He is a passionate advocate for disability issues and social justice.

The purpose of Accessing Home is to amplify the voices and lived experiences of disabled tenants living in community housing, with the aim of exploring how accessibility is understood and experienced by disabled tenants. It features interviews with eight community housing tenants who have physical and/or sensory impairments.

This submission comes from episode three, "Rethinking Housing Red Tape". It explores the bureaucratic barriers to accessible community housing, where they come from, and how red tape can also ensure that accessibility standards are upheld in the sector.
